Many stories tell of dogs who have beaten illnesses like anxiety, seizures, and cancer with the help of cannabidiol (CBD), which is just one of over 100 substances found in cannabis plants. But is it really possible for one thing to treat so many different issues?

Cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, are compounds that act like the natural chemicals our bodies make. Every vertebrate has these chemicals. Our bodies have special spots for these chemicals to fit into, which are all over the place. Our body’s own chemicals help control everything, telling parts of the body to work faster or slower to keep things balanced. The cannabinoids from cannabis plants affect these same spots, but each one does it in its own way. For instance, THC makes you feel high, but CBD doesn’t.

Does It Help?

There isn’t a lot of research on dogs yet, but there are tons (about 23,000 papers!) of studies on how CBD affects lab animals and humans. The findings are promising for treating pain (especially from arthritis), itchiness, anxiety, and even cancer. There’s at least one study for each of these conditions in dogs. But do dogs really benefit from CBD? It seems to vary.

Arthritis: Many studies have checked if CBD helps with the pain from arthritis, and they all say it does. A study from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine showed that dogs who took CBD (4.4 mg per pound, twice a day for a month) felt much better and were more active. Joe Wakshlag, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN, the main researcher, mentioned some dogs were so sick their owners thought about putting them down, but after a few days of CBD, they were walking and even going up stairs. A Baylor University study also saw improvements and noted that CBD works even better when given in a special form called a liposomal formulation.

Itchiness: Two recent studies, both thorough and well-controlled, showed CBD greatly lowers itchiness in dogs. An Australian study by CannPal found their CBD product cut down itchiness, swelling, and skin problems by 51 percent after eight weeks. An American study by ElleVet found their product, which mixes CBD with another cannabinoid called CBDA, significantly lowered how much owners noticed their dogs scratching.

How To Make Peanut Butter CBD Dog Treats

Regardless of whether you’re in the process of training your fur baby or you want to give them treats to help with their everyday aches and pains this recipe is delicious

Peanut butter treats are appreciated by dogs all over the world and will also be the ideal beginning for your dog’s CBD journey.

For this particular recipe, you will need:

  •  ¼ cup of peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 3 cups flour (If your dog is gluten intolerant, you can use gluten-free flour as an alternative.)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup of apple sauce
  • CBD oil (Pet or human cbd oil will work just fine)

SIDE NOTE: If you are using a human CBD oil please be sure it is all-natural (no flavorings, especially peppermint as that can sometimes irritate their stomachs) We of course have an all-natural CBD oil (shameless self-promotion) and a pet CBD oil. As for me I use the human cbd oil because it is more value for the money. But you can use the pet cbd oil as well, they just tend to be a lower milligram. On a side note the only difference between a pet cbd oil and a human one is that the human oil has to adhere to higher standards in the development process.

Amount of CBD Oil To Add: The amount you are going to add is going to be dependent on how much your dog weighs. I would start with 2 full droppers of a 1000mg oil. If you are using one of our 1000mg CBD sprays that would be 6 squirts. Thats about 60mg for the whole batch of treats you are making. Which depending how how big you make your treats could average out to about 6mg per treat if you made 10 treats.

Once you have all the necessary ingredients gathered up you are ready to begin

Step 1 – preheat the oven up to 350 degrees

Step 2 – Add in the apple sauce, peanut butter, eggs and oils into a bowl

Step 3 – Slowly mix in the baking soda and flour to make a firm dough. Making sure that the flour is thoroughly combined into the mix.

Step 4 – Portion the dough into the size that best fits your pet. I like to roll it into small balls. Small enough to where if Shadow (that’s my dog) gulps it down she wont choke on it. But everyone knows their dog best so please do what’s appropriate for your fur baby.

Step 5 – Place the portions onto the cookie sheet and place in the oven for 15 minutes.

DONE!

A few Tips

Avoid Toxic Ingredients – There are some ingredients that are poisonous to dogs. Raisins and chocolate especially.

Don’t give them all out at once – Its going to be delicious and they will beg for more. However, keep in mind that CBD should be consumed in moderation.

Keep an eye on their behavior – If you notice any changes in the health or behavior of your pooch, do not hesitate to give your veterinarian a call. Mine will usually just go lay down after, she gets very relaxed.
