Recent data shows a 50% rise in CBD usage over the last four years, as reported in Wednesday’s issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Roughly 20% of people surveyed admitted to using CBD in the previous year.
Users of cannabis often also use CBD, CBG, and other substances derived from hemp, according to research conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. Additionally, individuals in states where marijuana is illegal tend to use delta-8 THC, a less potent relative of delta-9 THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

“Even though many surveys point to this uptick in usage, we still don’t have solid information about the positive or negative effects of these substances,” stated Angela Bryan, a professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder with over ten years of research into the public health impact of cannabis legalization. Bryan was not part of the JAMA study. The popularity of CBD and similar products has surged following the 2018 farm bill, which made hemp farming legal. These products, including lotions, oils, sweets, and vapes, lack strict government oversight. However, in 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a CBD-based medication to treat two rare forms of epilepsy.
People use CBD and other hemp derivatives for various issues like anxiety, sleep problems, and pain. However, experts argue that there’s insufficient clinical evidence to support these uses. The FDA has also cautioned that CBD could harm the liver and interact negatively with certain drugs.
